Here is the answer to this &#8220;sixty-four dollar question&#8221; from <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node_id=1536421\">everything2.com.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=sixty-four\" title=\"sixty-four\">sixty-four<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=dollar\" title=\"dollar\">dollar<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=question\" title=\"question\">question<\/a> (also written $<a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=64\" title=\"64\">64<\/a> question) is the <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=critical\" title=\"critical\">critical<\/a> question about a <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=problem\" title=\"problem\">problem<\/a> or a <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=crucial\" title=\"crucial\">crucial<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=issue\" title=\"issue\">issue<\/a>, something <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=difficult\" title=\"difficult\">difficult<\/a> if not <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=impossible\" title=\"impossible\">impossible<\/a> to answer.<\/p>\n<p>This comes from a popular <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=1940s\" title=\"1940s\">1940s<\/a> U.S. <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=radio\" title=\"radio\">radio<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=quiz%20show\" title=\"quiz show\">quiz show<\/a>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=Take%20It%20Or%20Leave%20It\" title=\"Take It Or Leave It\">Take It Or Leave It<\/a><\/em>, which offered $64 as the largest prize. The first question had a prize of $1 and the prize total <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=double\" title=\"double\">double<\/a>d with each <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=successive\" title=\"successive\">successive<\/a> question: $2, 4, 8, 16, 32, culminating in the $64 question. (Like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=Who%20Wants%20To%20Be%20A%20Millionaire\" title=\"Who Wants To Be A Millionaire\">Who Wants To Be A Millionaire<\/a><\/em> if they actually stuck to the same <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=ratio\" title=\"ratio\">ratio<\/a> between questions.) There was later a <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=CBS\" title=\"CBS\">CBS<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=television\" title=\"television\">television<\/a> quiz show in the U.S., <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=The%20%2464%2C000%20Question\" title=\"The $64,000 Question\">The $64,000 Question<\/a>, based on the radio show. There the first question was the $64 dollar one, and the contestants then worked their way up to the top prize, $64,000. It and its first spin-off, <em>The 64,000 Challenge<\/em>, were hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=Hal%20March\" title=\"Hal March\">Hal March<\/a>.  A later, <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=syndicated\" title=\"syndicated\">syndicated<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=spinoff\" title=\"spinoff\">spinoff<\/a> was &#8220;The $128,000 Question.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because of this change between the radio and the TV versions, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=inflation\" title=\"inflation\">inflation<\/a>, the expression is also heard as &#8220;sixty-four <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=thousand\" title=\"thousand\">thousand<\/a> dollar question&#8221; and even &#8220;sixty-four <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=million\" title=\"million\">million<\/a> dollar question,&#8221; (as well as the numeric representations of those amounts) and has led to such take-offs as &#8220;sixty-four <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=cent\" title=\"cent\">cent<\/a> question,&#8221; &#8220;sixty-four <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=franc\" title=\"franc\">franc<\/a> question&#8221; and &#8220;sixty-four <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=bit\" title=\"bit\">bit<\/a> question&#8221; (the latter referring specifically to using <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=64-bit\" title=\"64-bit\">64-bit<\/a> technology).<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=vocal\" title=\"vocal\">vocal<\/a> version of the TV show&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=instrumental\" title=\"instrumental\">instrumental<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=theme%20music\" title=\"theme music\">theme music<\/a>, sung by Hal March, was released as a <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=45%20rpm\" title=\"45 rpm\">45 rpm<\/a> single called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=Love\" title=\"Love\">Love<\/a> is the Sixty-Four Thousand Dollar Question&#8221; in 1956. Its <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=lyrics\" title=\"lyrics\">lyrics<\/a> were by Fred Ebb, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/everything2.com\/index.pl?node=music\" title=\"music\">music<\/a> by Norman F. Leyden.
